Overview
National Preschool Setting Develop Program was initiated in 2012 by HPB to improve health, wellbeing and safety of preschool children and preschool community. There are 19,668 pre–schools in Sri Lanka registered with the Provincial Directorates of Early Childhood Development (PD/ECD). According to the statistics of National Secretariat for Early Childhood Care and Development (NSECD) a total of 578,160 children are enrolled in pre–schools, and 37,000 preschool teachers are working in Sri Lanka. Most pre–school children in Sri Lanka are either 4 or 5 years, while about 15% are between 2 to 3 years old.
The Pre–School Health Promotion Setting Development program was initiated by the Health Promotion Bureau in collaboration with other public health control programs in Ministry of Health, NSECD and all PD/ECD’s at national level. The Medical Officer of Health and primary health teams in divisional level, Medical Officers (MCH), Health Education Officers in districts and Early Childhood Development Officers/DO-ECD are implementation level focal officials in this program. The target of the program is to uplift minimum of 5 preschools per MOH area as health promoting preschool settings each year. To achieve this target close collaboration between these three key stakeholders at national, provincial district and divisional levels is important. Following activities are carried out regularly to ensure Preschools are developed as health promoting settings as per the annual target and maintained throughout.
- Advocacy and mediation of all key partners at all levels to ensure they are well informed, committed and collaborated.
- Development and dissemination of the Preschool Health Promotion Manual and 10 step guide to support implementation level health and ECD facilitators to establish and maintain the health promoting preschools.
- Enabling the key officials to carryout functions according to the guides
- Establish the preschool health promotion information system as 3 simple google forms, capacitate implementing level partners and maintenance of the information system as a monitoring tool.
- Conducting annual reviews at the end of each year to monitor the progress and share success stories for wider learning.
