Director’s Message

Behavior change is the cornerstone of prevention, management and damage control of many adverse health events and outcomes of modern time. Be it antibiotic resistance, mental health issues, non-communicable diseases or communicable diseases, behavior change of individuals, families and communities will deliver the best wellbeing return for the investment. In the context of competing priorities in investment for health, let alone the total investment for public health, health promotion should be the priority considering the stable and long-term return on investment. Whereas countries which took early steps in funding health promotion are reaping the benefits, it is never too late to make the first steps. Communication for mediation, enabling, establishment of supportive settings and platforms through media and publicity is priority thrust area for health promotion. Community mobilization and engagement through risk communication in modern days of social media presence and activism is an uphill task to undertake for all health promoters. Advocacy: health communication for policy change and targeted communication for change of behavior in relation to determinants of health encompasses the diversity and the range of baseline communications for health promotion. Community engagement and empowerment achieved and sustained through co-creation and accountability, underlines the Health Promotion Bureau approach to achieve its goal of sustainable healthy and happy living for all Sri Lankans. Lets be health promotion conscious in all our activities, on a daily basis.

Dr. Ranjith Batuwanthudawe

Director, Health Promotion Bureau, Ministry of health, Sri Lanka.
