It should be given at the age of completion of 9 months, (However ensure a minimum of 8 weeks’ time interval between supplementary MMR dose and due routine vaccination).

The patient should be registered at a medical clinic at the government hospital and should be treated accordingly and followed up.

  • Healthy eating: Encourage the intake of vegetables, fruits, whole grains and protein from plant sources or fish. Reduce intake of foods high in sugar, saturated fats (Coconut, coconut milk, coconut oil, meat and meat products, full cream milk and dairy products, bakery products and chocolates) and avoid foods containing trans-fats (Deep fried foods such as Patties, Rolls, Cutlets, Potato/ Manioc chips, Bakery products such as Pastries, Doughnuts, Biscuits and Cakes, Chili paste)
  • Reduce salt intake:Recommended salt intake for a healthy adult is <5g (maximum of 1 tea spoon) of iodized salt per person per day. This can be achieved by avoiding addition of salt to rice and minimizing intake of high-salt food items such as bread, soy sauce, yeast extract spreads, salt-added snacks, sausages and fast foods. When cooking dried fish, it is advisable to cook it after washing several times or soaking it in water to remove salt.
  • Weight reduction: Individuals who are overweight or obese (body mass index more than or equal to 25 kgm-2) to lose 5-10% of their current body weight in 3 to 6 months and maintain it thereafter. Minimize abdominal obesity by keeping waist circumference less than 80cm and 90cm in females and males, respectively.
  • Regular physical activity recommended for adults;
    At least 150-300mins of moderate intensity aerobic physical activity (E.g., jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, aerobics, yoga) or at least 75-150 mins of vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity or an equivalent combination of moderate and vigorous intensity activity throughout the week.

Recommended levels of physical activity for those above 18 years is,
150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity over a week E.g., jogging, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, aerobics, yoga. Gymnasium is not the only option. Sedentary behavior has to be strictly avoided- reducing screen time, engaging in household chores avoid being seated or being in the reclining position for more than half an hour at a stretch during awake hours.
And yes, physical activity helps in the control of cholesterol & glucose levels and improves BP control.

Public Health Nursing Officers have been appointed to Primary Care Institutions. Their primary responsibility is community based palliative care through home visits. At the moment there are 200 PHNOO island wide involved in this. Next batch of 80 are being trained now.
